Dublin comes together to aid hurricane victims

Dublin Texas - -  Businesses, churches and individuals in Dublin, Texas are coming together to help provide basic necessities to people who have lost everything or have been forced to leave their homes because of Hurricane Katrina. Working with a disaster relief agency in Louisiana, the people of Dublin will be putting together Health Kits for distribution to affected peoples. "So many people want to do something...anything...to help." said Pat Leatherwood of First National Bank. "It's in our nature to care for others. All we are doing is helping to provide that opportunity to the good people here in Dublin."

New items from a published list can be dropped off at Dublin Dr Pepper, First National Bank of Dublin, or the Paradigm Alternative School. On Sunday, September 11th the public is invited to meet at the Dr Pepper Stage behind Old Doc's Soda Shop to assemble the kits for delivery. "I think it's important that folks have some feeling of sweat-equity." Mark Kloster, owner of Dublin Dr Pepper said. "Folks want to get their hands dirty. We can't all go to the gulf coast but we can all do our part. We are lucky to have become connected with this disaster relief agency on the ground in Louisiana, UMCOR. With their guidance we make sure the right items get to the right people. The last thing we want to do is cause added burden to relief operations."

At 3:00 p.m. people are encouraged to come enjoy free Dublin Dr Pepper and wonderful music by local legend Layne Golden's band while giving back to their nation.  "Can you think of a better way for Americans to commemorate Sept. 11 than to give to fellow citizens who've been hit with disaster?" organizer Pat Leatherwood said. "No," continued Leatherwood. "You can't. Noone could think of any better way."

Donations are also being accepted at First National Bank of Dublin. "The money collected will be used to balance out the kits, in case we get more of one thing than another. Then whatever remains will be donated to the Red Cross." remarked Leatherwood.
